How to Go from a Freelance Web Designer to a Web Development Business

The last two years has been a scary, exciting and time-consuming process trying to become a successful freelance web designer. However up to this point my approach to freelancing has been incorrect. I've done a lot of things correct. Finding a niche for myself in the industry, finding good paying clients, clients paying on time and improving my skill set to become a better design and developer. However, I need to stop seeing myself as just a guy that designs and builds websites to a business entity that generates various streams of income.

Now you might be asking yourself “Wayne how you goin’ do this”. Good questions. I have no clue. Lol. In all seriousness, let me share with you my plan and maybe this will help a up and coming web designer or developer in a similar situation on how to make the transistion.

  1. Create interesting blogs, linkedin and twitter post: I post on linkedin here and there. But there is no real strategy to my post and I had no clue who was my target audience. Starting the second week in June 2018, I will have bi-weekly blog post. My target audience is junior web designers & developer new to the industry and small to medium size business with an existing web presents that want to take their online experience to the next level.
  2. Complete redesign of www.waynesstewart.com: A redesign of waynesstewart.com has been in the works for the last few weeks. Now that I have a much clearer set of business requirements for my new website, the design has metamorphosed into a business website with a freelancer fair. I think this is the correct way to go so I can start generating passive income.
  3. Placing myself as a Thought Leader: I was on a job interview the other day. One of the questions the interviewers asked me was. “You have a lot of great experience and knowledge; do you see yourself as a though leader in the UI Design industry”. I answered his questions truthfully and said “I never really saw myself as a Thought Leader” but with my knowledge and experience I need to think of myself in that light. On the car ride home, my answer stuck in my head. I need to get my ideas and industry perspectives out to more people. I’ve learned first hands so many do’s and don’ts in the business that I can really help the next generation of UI Designer & Front End Developer navigate the industry.
  4. You don’t have to do it all or know it all: Till this day, I’m always on a quest to learn more, get better and stay on the cutting edge for my clients. It’s now time to start delegating out projects and tasks to other freelancers so I can spend time growing the business and building business relationships.
  5. Its ok to be broke with a plan: Time to get real. Freelancing is HARDWORK. Especially if you have a family like I do. When your starting out like I am. There are times you are going to be broke. I mean really broke. So, you are going to do what you have to do to keep food on the table. However, its ok. Stay the course. Some of the things have keep me motivated are creating a clear direction for the business, a true passion for what you do, trying to figure out how to get better every day and don’t be afraid to ask people for help. At first you might not have work for a month, you might lose a contract, you might have to work on some bs projects. But just keep working towards your goal.
